Decanter Centrifuge for Titanium Dioxide Slurry Washing and Dewatering

Decanter Centrifuge for Titanium Dioxide Slurry Washing and Dewatering
Description

The Peony Decanter Centrifuge for Titanium Dioxide Slurry Washing and Dewatering is designed for the continuous thickening, washing-stage separation, and recovery of TiO₂ slurry from pigment production, surface treatment, washing, and wastewater recovery processes.

Titanium dioxide slurry often contains fine pigment particles, residual acids, soluble salts, treatment chemicals, or wash liquor carried over from upstream processing. The decanter centrifuge separates the TiO₂ solids from the liquid phase continuously, allowing the slurry to be thickened before further washing, filtration, drying, coating, or milling.

This configuration is suitable for continuous production lines where stable solids recovery, wash-liquid control, reduced slurry volume, and process-water reuse are important.

Typical Applications
  • Titanium dioxide pigment slurry thickening
  • TiO₂ washing-stage separation
  • Removal of residual soluble salts after washing
  • Acidic TiO₂ slurry dewatering
  • Chloride-process titanium dioxide slurry treatment
  • Sulfate-process titanium dioxide slurry washing
  • TiO₂ surface-treatment slurry concentration
  • Pigment slurry recovery from process water
  • Titanium dioxide wastewater solids recovery
  • TiO₂ slurry preparation before filter pressing
  • Titanium dioxide residue recovery before drying
  • Process-water recycle in pigment production lines

Titanium Dioxide Slurry Washing and Dewatering Solution

Peony provides the continuous solid-liquid separation section for titanium dioxide washing and thickening processes.

TiO₂ Slurry → Dilution Wash / Reslurry Tank → Decanter Centrifuge → Wash Liquor Collection → Optional Second Washing Stage → Thickened TiO₂ Slurry → Filter Press / Dryer / Surface Treatment / Milling

For applications requiring lower soluble-salt carryover, a multi-stage washing arrangement can be used:

TiO₂ Slurry → Wash Tank → Decanter 1 → Reslurry Tank → Decanter 2 → Final Thickened TiO₂ → Filter Press / Dryer

The separated liquid can be returned to an upstream washing stage, sent to process-water treatment, or discharged through a controlled wastewater circuit.

Peony can provide:

  • Decanter centrifuge selection based on TiO₂ particle size and slurry behavior
  • Agitated washing and reslurry tanks
  • Controlled feed pump and flow regulation
  • Fresh-water or recycled wash-water dosing arrangement
  • Multi-stage washing and thickening configuration
  • Adjustable bowl speed, differential speed, and pond depth
  • Corrosion-resistant wetted material configuration
  • Wear protection for scroll and solids discharge areas
  • Wash-liquor collection, recycle, or treatment connection
  • PLC and VFD control system
  • Connection to filter presses, dryers, surface-treatment systems, or milling lines

How the Decanter Centrifuge Works

1. TiO₂ Slurry Conditioning

Titanium dioxide slurry enters an agitated buffer tank or washing tank before centrifugation.

Where washing is required, fresh water or recycled wash liquid is added to dilute residual soluble salts, acids, or impurities carried with the pigment slurry.

2. Controlled Slurry Feeding

The conditioned slurry enters the rotating bowl through a controlled feed pipe.

Stable feed concentration is important because TiO₂ slurry can be fine, dense, and sensitive to changes in viscosity or solids content.

3. Centrifugal Sedimentation

Inside the high-speed rotating bowl, centrifugal force separates titanium dioxide solids from the liquid phase.

TiO₂ particles settle against the bowl wall, while the wash liquor or clarified liquid forms the inner layer.

4. Continuous Solids Conveying

The internal screw conveyor rotates at a controlled differential speed relative to the bowl.

This transports the settled TiO₂ solids toward the conical end for continuous discharge.

5. Wash Liquor Discharge

The separated liquid leaves through the liquid outlet.

It can be reused in an upstream washing stage, returned to a process-water tank, sent to further washing, or routed to wastewater treatment.

6. Thickened TiO₂ Solids Discharge

The concentrated titanium dioxide solids are discharged continuously from the solids outlet.

The discharged solids can be sent to a second washing stage, filter press, dryer, surface-treatment process, or pigment milling system.

Key Selection Considerations

TiO₂ Particle Size and Settling Behavior

Titanium dioxide particles are fine and dense. Particle-size distribution, agglomeration condition, and slurry dispersion behavior directly affect separation performance.

Residual Salt and Acid Removal Requirement

The required washing stages depend on the amount of residual chloride, sulfate, acid, alkali, or soluble impurities remaining in the TiO₂ slurry.

Slurry Chemistry

Material selection should consider pH, chloride concentration, sulfuric acid residue, temperature, oxidizing conditions, and cleaning chemicals.

Feed Solids Concentration

A stable solids concentration improves separation consistency. Very dilute slurry may require more wash stages, higher hydraulic capacity, or feed conditioning.

Final Moisture Requirement

A decanter centrifuge is generally used for thickening and primary dewatering. For lower final moisture, TiO₂ slurry is commonly sent to a filter press, vacuum filter, spray dryer, flash dryer, or other drying equipment.

Product Purity Requirement

For high-grade pigment applications, the washing system should be designed around the required impurity limit rather than centrifuge capacity alone. A staged reslurry and separation arrangement may be necessary.

Main Advantages

Continuous TiO₂ Slurry Thickening

The centrifuge continuously reduces slurry volume and concentrates titanium dioxide solids before final filtration or drying.

Supports Multi-Stage Washing

When combined with reslurry tanks, the decanter can support one-stage or multi-stage washing to reduce soluble salt, acid, or wash-liquor carryover.

Improved Solids Recovery

The decanter helps recover fine TiO₂ particles from dilute wash streams or process water, reducing pigment loss.

Adjustable Separation Control

Bowl speed, differential speed, pond depth, and feed rate can be adjusted to balance solids recovery, liquid clarity, handling capacity, and discharged solids concentration.

Corrosion-Resistant Configuration Available

Wetted parts can be selected according to slurry chemistry, acid content, chloride concentration, sulfate content, operating temperature, and cleaning requirement.

Wear Protection for Dense Pigment Slurry

Wear-resistant protection can be applied to the feed zone, scroll flights, bowl cone, and solids discharge section when required.

FAQ

Can a decanter centrifuge wash titanium dioxide slurry directly?

A decanter centrifuge mainly performs continuous sedimentation and dewatering. For washing, TiO₂ slurry is normally mixed with wash water in an upstream reslurry or dilution tank before entering the centrifuge.

Can the system remove residual chloride or sulfate salts?

Yes. A washing and reslurry system can reduce soluble salt carryover. The final result depends on wash-water ratio, number of washing stages, mixing efficiency, and separation performance.

Is one washing stage enough for titanium dioxide slurry?

It depends on the required product purity and impurity level. For lower residual salt or acid targets, a two-stage or multi-stage washing arrangement may be required.

Can the separated liquid be recycled?

Yes. Depending on its chemistry, the separated wash liquor can be reused in an upstream wash stage, returned to a process-water tank, or sent to wastewater treatment.

Does titanium dioxide slurry require special material selection?

Often yes. The proper wetted material depends on pH, chloride or sulfate concentration, temperature, acid content, oxidizing conditions, and cleaning chemicals. SS316L, duplex stainless steel, titanium, or customized alloys may be considered.
